Under the Bridge

Under the Bridge is the song heard in Jungkook’s car as he drives Shelby away from a gathering. Its appearance gives a musical frame to a subdued passage in which she begins to study him with fresh curiosity, while he remains focused on the road.

Appearance in the story

After Jungkook refuses Lexie’s advances, he leaves with Shelby and Loki. Once Jungkook and Shelby have fastened their seat belts, Under the Bridge by the Red Hot Chili Peppers can be heard inside the car. Loki settles on the back seat; Jungkook drives, and Shelby watches the passing landscape.

Narrative role

The song accompanies a pause after the social tension of the gathering. In the car, Shelby wonders why Jungkook is being kind to her and observes his profile and tattoos, including the contrasting oni designs on his hands and the words Love and Hate on his knuckles. The music is part of the scene’s quiet atmosphere, which lets her attention shift from the crowded gathering to the person beside her; the passage does not state a specific meaning for the song or connect its lyrics to her thoughts.
